Locations of note include the city of Independence (Jackson County) the original place of settlement for the group. After being driven from the County in 1833, Mormons fled across the Missouri River to Clay County where they remained until 1836. By that time, Alexander Doniphan, a prominent citizen in Liberty, Missouri convinced the state legislature to organize Caldwell County for their protection. The city of Far West was designated as the county seat. The population of the county quickly swelled to 10,000 citizens.
